I really don’t want to hear that you’re a rapper and can roll a blunt in less than a minute, I also don’t want to see a billboard about you being a rapper showing me that you can roll a blunt in less than a minute.
Marketing yourself takes
a lot, a lot of your effort, and especially patience. You can do it through
social media, billboards, websites, newspapers, catalogs, and more. But however
you do it, do it good, (no no, we’re not talking about sex, we’re talking about
marketing). I really don’t want to hear that you’re a rapper and that you can
roll a blunt in less than a minute, I also don’t want to see a billboard about
you being a rapper showing me that you can roll a blunt in less than a minute. What
makes you different? (I actually hate anyone who tells me that they’re a rapper).
Oh you think you can design, so what? I don’t want to buy your clothes if I can
already get them elsewhere. You’re a personal blogger, please tell me what
makes your blog different then the blonde girl that comes dressed up in Marc
Jacobs to fashion week thinking she’s the bomb holding a camera, I see no
difference.
Sorry for the tough
love, but the truth is being the same as the girl next door or the boy next
door won’t get you very far. You need to be different. Find it within your
heart and soul what makes you that beautiful ray of sunshine on a cloudy day
and what makes you special. We all are special and unique magical creatures in
this world. It just may take some of us a little longer to find it than others.
Take a trip to Mumbai maybe you’ll find it there or learn to fly a kite on the
breezy Manhattan beach in LA. You’ll need to find it because it builds
character and your brand. Take a look at Nadia Aboulhosn who is an up and
coming plus size fashion blogger inspiring women and even men of all sizes to
not worry about their body size but embrace it. Demi Lovato is also someone who
inspires young girls and guys on bullying and suicide, it not only helps her
build an image, but it shows in her music and work. It’s who she is! Richard
Branson isn’t your typical businessman, he embraces everything about himself. All
I’m saying is find what makes you different and use it as a tool.
Business cards don’t always
have to have all of your information on it, (depending what business you have),
but if you’re just someone looking for a job an email, a number to contact you
at, a name, and a couple social pages to show your work are fine, maybe one or
two more things too. You don’t always need your address, books you’ve read, a description
of how your sex life is. Advertisements for social media are very important and
there are a few rules – never post on a holiday or your birthday, Thursday,
Fridays, and Saturdays are off limits after 7 or 8, (unless you are marketing
or attending at some big event such as New York Fashion Week, The Oscars, or
even Coachella then people will look at your post, otherwise they will be too
drunk after 8. Sundays are your glory days. “If you’re reading this and
approaching 50 years of age, remember that oak trees do not produce acorns
until they are 50 years old.”
When advertising any
form of a written piece if a photo is needed be sure to use a photo that fits what
you have written. If you don’t know what fits, reread your article and try to find
a small detail or aspect, it can be random or silly, but it just needs to grab
your audience’s attention. There aren’t any rules for the two, so when you are
doing this, just make sure to find something that makes sense.
Up and coming designers?
Or just lonely? You can always be creative with this whether it’s a little or a
lot, you work with a few friends as designers or maybe you’re a jewelry
designer who is on her own trying to get her company more noticed. You can do
many different things. One way is find a local mall or maybe even a vendor
showing (if you’re in a smaller city, be smart with this and try to be more
advanced than anyone else in your city with a similar product category, or just
show your work at a bigger city vendor like Atlanta or Los Angeles. Have a
small table set up with your jewelry designs, business cards, visuals of a
computer screen and website ready so people can visit after. Another way to do
this, and let’s say you’re a fashion designer who has a website. Get your website
up and make it very clean, simple, and easy to navigate to find your work. Use a
very limit of colors so it doesn’t give anyone a headache, creative photos, and
simple links – nothing that will take them to porn or you smoking weed. No one
wants to see that shit. It’s always a good thing to have photos with other
photos or some art inside of it – people love creativity, even if the photos don’t
make sense to each other, they make sense to what your company is overall. Correct?
Correct.
Picasso was right when he said, "Art is
the lie that tells the truth."
“Picasso’s definition is wonderfully relevant
to advertising in today’s marketing-wise world, where almost all products are
comparable in quality. When advertising is great advertising – when it’s
inventive, ineverent, audacious – it literally becomes a benefit of the
product, and Picasso’s “lie” becomes the truth. Cars drive better. Food taste
better. Perfume smells better. If you find it hard to agree with this basic belief,
you may find it extremely difficult to understand the magic of advertising.” Damn
